The Hidden Life of Garbage - Heater Rogers

1. According to Rogers, why are landfills "tucked away, on the edge of town, in otherwise untraveled terrain"?

These lines describe about the challenges and results of managing the waste. The garbage is placed in the place that are uninhabited. It is a question of about how to dispose the garbage. Since the Roman time, it has been a challenge to dump the garbage that the municipality collects. It is ironic that, people throw their trash into the streets of cities or dump into rivers and ditches. The open thrown garbage starts to produce foul smell, so they start to burn in incinerators, though that also produce dense smoke.

Whatever the steps we take to manage the waste, it creats the environment pollution. Since 1920s only people have the practice of the systematic covering the garbage in dumps began. These "sanitary landfill" are managed in the world with the covering the soil. It has become the challenge to the world about how to mange the different types of the waste. In the world, the wastes are managed undoubtly with greats effort but the real solution is still not identified. Waste management Inc., the largest rubbish handling corporation in the world, operates its Geological Reclamation Operation and Waste System (GROWS) landfill just outside Morrisville, Pennsylvania- in the docile river valley.

Though it is a great challenge to manage the waste, we can reduce the garbage if we can't stop producing. We can separate the garbage into two (or three) halves of degradable and non degradable. And we can reduce the burden of challenges of trash.

2. What is Roger's attitude toward waste disposal in general and toward disposal companies like Waste Management Inc. in particular? Do you share her feelings?

Yes, I do really agree with Roger's feelings. We can not evade the reality that we are producing 4.5 pounds of trash everyday. We can not stop producing trash but we can reduce it. When we reduce we can manage more than half of the trash in

general way.

By general, she means we can separate the bio-degradable and non-degradable trash in our own home. When we separate it, if possible we can manage the degradable in our farm or in field. Or we can give to the disposal companies which manage trash easily. Rogers want to draw the attention of the readers about what they are doing about. She produces the history data and make the objective description of her view in subjective manner.

The description of the places where the landfills are made, the movements of the clusters of trailer trucks, yellow earth movers, compacting machines, steamrollers, and water tankers make the essay more objective descriptive. By such appeals. she draws the attention. Though the disposal companies like Waste Management Inc are trying their best to mange. Incinerators are also doing the task but they produce environment pollution by its cloudy smoke. Our general (Unsystematic) efforts are also in practice and the WMI like companies are also doing their best in systematic way.

We can bring the change, if we want. We do our negligence. We know what we can do and what can be done. We lack only our compassion to complete it. It is our effort to reduce our trash to get rid of this problem.

3.What do you think you and your family could do to reduce the amount of garbage you produce? Try to be realistic one.

Though we cannot live without producing the garbage, but we can reduce it in the greater amount. Rogers expects a life where we don't have to get rid of the much trash. I do agree with Rogers..

Yes, we can do it in the family. It begins from the kitchen. First we can start with the city life, the trash can be separated in to degradable and non degradable from our kitchen. Then we keep it into separate bins. Then after we can produce them to the garbage collector. They can manage them in to their own easy way. Sometimes we might have some junks that can be recycled. The recycled junks are greatly used by factories and industries after processing it thoroughly. In the city or in the market, we might keep the bins in the different places and handle it. Restaurants and hospitals or the industries also produce garbages. We can separate them and recycle to some extent.

In the village life, as we have our own field, we can separate degradable garbages for the composite fertilizer after decomposing it. The organic fertilizer might be used in the field. The vegetables stalks and fruit peels or skins can be fed to the domestic animals. The pets also consume some kinds of the trash. The non deg dable trash might be sent for the recycling or for the other types of the management.

So, I completely agree with Rogers for managing the trash. When we do personally for such efforts we can reduce the trash and we wouldn't have much garbage to get rid of.
